Yoga

Yoga is a collection of practices developed over thousands of years for enriched living and is a system for overall physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Millions around the world practice various aspects of yoga, including physical postures, ethics, and breathing techniques, to experience the benefits of stress and pain relief, improved balance, overall wellness, increased vitality, mental clarity, and peace of mind. While yoga classes have increased in popularity, some in our community may not have easy access to such, due to perceived or actual barriers, including age, transportation, cultural, or socioeconomic status. Breathing Space is dedicated to offering opportunities to experience and learn yoga in under-served populations.

Meditation

Meditation is the practice of placing one’s attention on a single point of focus in the present moment, which may be on the breath, bodily sensations, a word or phrase, or even an image. The practice of meditation has been around for thousands of years in many secular and spiritual environments, and its techniques encourage and develop mental concentration, clarity, equanimity, a positive outlook, calm, and in time, improvement in seeing of the true nature of things. With time, training the mind through any of the hundreds of techniques available through meditation, contemplation, or mindfulness practices, allow a person to experience deeper levels of patience, insight, and compassion.

Community

“With unity” is exactly how we at Breathing Space aim to offer practices and resources for our neighbors’ and neighborhoods’ well-being and wholeness. Individuals with a healthy mind-body are able to more fully enjoy and engage with their families, friends, coworkers, social groups, and community. Building, connecting with, and celebrating our community is at the very heart of all Breathing Space’s offerings whether in the form of speakers and workshops, free yoga and meditation classes, or engaging events such as “In Plain Sight,” which encourages interaction through the simple act of gazing.
